Dr Cheung obtained his joint PhD in English Language & Literature and Education from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and University of Technology Sydney in 2018. His PhD research investigated how English-as-a-second-language (ESL) masters' degree students use evaluative language to establish stance in the introductions of research proposals and dissertations.

Dr Cheung has extensive teaching and research experience. He has taught subjects such as Discourse Analysis, Semantics and Pragmatics, Media Communication, Text Linguistics for understanding language art and science, as well as English for Academic Purposes at the pre-associate degree level. He was also engaged in several teaching & learning and healthcare communication projects prior to joining CPCE. Apart from his primary research on evaluative language in academic writing, he is also developing his secondary research on teaching language across the curriculum and peer assessment tasks. In addition, he is Associate Editor for Linguistics and the Human Sciences, the Emerging Sources Citation Indexed (ESCI) journal published by Equinox UK.

Aside from being a linguist, Dr Cheung plays music during his free time. He mainly listens to western music, and his current favourites include Jeremy Zucker, Sun Rai, Tame Impala and Tom Misch.
